Two days after the murder of George Floyd, I posted an Instagram story asking the Austin community if anyone knew of a wall upon which I could paint a mural in response to the news. Within 5 minutes “Native Hostel”, located in East Austin, replied with an emphatic “YES”. Within two days of the green light, I began composing and painting “If He Cant Breathe, We Cant Breathe”. I already knew that I wanted to do more than simply depict George with angel wings, a halo, and “R.I.P.” because this was a powerful moment, a pregnant pause spring loaded with an opportunity to not, pay homage to victims of Police brutality, but more importantly, bring as many different people together as possible to step forth into OUR truth and ultimately heal.
